We launched our project in October 2022. Every Monday evening, we met alternately online and in person. In January, we gathered for a preparatory retreat in Blaubeuren—the perfect opportunity to prepare intensively for the conference. The participants learned how to engage in constructive discussions as Somali diplomats and practiced delivering political speeches in English. The preparation also included in-depth research on Somalia’s social, economic, and environmental positions, the results of which were documented in position papers and sent to the organizers of the NMUN conference in New York City.
Our journey began on March 27, 2022, in three beautiful apartments in the heart of Koreatown. We had a week of study ahead of us, filled with many unique and exciting visits to several permanent missions to the UN. We also visited the ZDF office, the German startup Celonis, and the German Chamber of Foreign Trade. On April 2, 2022, the big day finally arrived. Our 17 delegates could hardly wait to present what they had learned in the weekly preparatory sessions. Now that the project is complete, we can say: It was all worth the effort. The study week and participation in the National Model United Nations 2023 were unforgettable. It exceeded all our expectations. Both we, the project leaders, and the participants surpassed ourselves professionally and achieved outstanding results. Our delegation was awarded an Honorable Mention.
At the beginning, what brought us together was above all our interest in international politics. By the end, we were united by the shared experiences, memories, and friendships that developed during our trip. In conclusion, we, the project leaders, are more than satisfied with the outcome of the simulation and are very proud to have mentored such a dedicated and hardworking group of students.
