Last Friday, the Club of Hohenheim was a guest at the State Parliament of Baden-Württemberg. We began with an engaging and entertaining tour of the building, which gave us a great insight into how the parliament works. A heartfelt thank you goes to the Visitor Service of the Landtag for their wonderful guidance!

A real highlight followed: in a conversation with Florian Schnabel, Head of Communications for the SPD in the Landtag, we were able to hold a background discussion. Instead of prepared statements, we heard honest and open words, and we gained a sense of how politics really works behind the scenes. Precisely because this was not a conversation with an official elected representative, the insights were especially deep and refreshing.

The discussion centered on questions of media and political communication: How does the current media landscape shape political developments? What role does social media play when politics is communicated? How do daily newspapers work today, and what does that mean for news coverage? The art of delivering bad news well also came up, as did the question of how we, as citizens, can deal with a challenging political and economic situation.

The conversation took place “under three” (off the record, for background only), which is why we will not report any of its content. All the more do we take away personally: new perspectives, plenty of food for thought, and a better understanding of how politics, media, and the public interact.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Florian Schnabel for his openness and the time he took for us!
